In this paper, the sequential search method is used to determine optimal locations and capacities of passive dampers in the 76-story wind-excited benchmark building, such that a specified performance, such as maximum rms floor acceleration, is satisfied. It is found that the sequential search method is quite effective in determining locations and capacities of dampers. Further, a method for the design of capacities of passive dampers, which is based on active control theories, is also presented and its application to wind-excited building is demonstrated by numerical simulation results.
