Template matching is considered to be a powerful image processingtool that is particularly useful in industrial inspection problems. Inindustrial inspection large numbers of objects have to be processed inshort time. The processing itself is relatively easy. The defects thatare to be found are known and can be modelled with black and whitepatterns. Binary images are usually sufficient. In this paper the binarytemplate matching operation is explained and some design rules for thesetemplates are presented. Furthermore some algorithms are presented thatallow these templates to be learned by teaching the methods
