Practical MMIC design approaches for phased array antenna elements

Phased array antennas have been receiving considerable attention in the 1930's due to the rapid evolution of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC). The requirements for phased arrays differ considerable depending on whether they are for radars or for communications and whether they are to be airborne, space-based, or terrestrially located. However, in general, the basic elements include phase shifters and amplifiers. There have been a number of papers published on GaAs MMIC amplifiers and phase shifters. [1,2]. However, these papers have not addressed the design approaches necessary to insure that the MMIC meets its required specifications.
