Fiberisation of the subscriber loop some time in the 1990's appears to be a realistic expectation, but institutional problems may hold back its implementation in Canada. As a strategy, attention is being focused on the development of a fiber optic network that is suited for intelligent buildings. A high speed asynchronous TDM fiber optic transmission system has been developed for a star network to meet the digital transmission requirements of telephone, data and building control signals such as those for HVAC (heating, ventilating & air conditioning). Broadband video and high speed signals are handled through a separate star network overlayed on the digital network. development of a broadband matrix switch using optomechanical and optoelectronic means is underway and the design can meet the requirements of a matrix switch for broadband subscriber services.
