Monitoring, control, administration, and maintenance operations in a private network are quite different from those of a public network. The differences are best understood in terms of each system's technical and business environment, and the appropriate system response. This paper addresses the four principal functions of private network operation and management, and defines the role of the centralized, integrated network control facility in accomplishing them. It concludes with a discussion of voice and data network applications and the role of the network control facility in the ISDN.
