Many modern satellite communication networks involve a large number of circuits whose quality depends on a number of variables. The performance of any particular link will deviate from the "typical"case depending on the earth station location in the satellite coverage region, the interference environment and the transmission equipment. The variability in performance is further increased for Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) systems where the frequency assignment will also influence circuit quality. When performance is affected by many independent variables, it is generally preferred to analyze their effect on a statistical, rather than worstcase basis.This approach bas been applied to satellite link budgets with the objective of assuring a specific performance level at a given confidence level.This paper examines a general approach to link analysis which treats entries in a link budget as random variables. Methods are examined for obtaining the Probability Density Function (PDF), in dB, of typical terms The individual density functions can be convolved to obtain the PDF of the quantity describing the overall link performance such as link margin or circuit availability.
