Our civilizatio nthreatens one of its vital resources: pure water. The progressive interference by humans in hydrogeochemical cycles and new chemical pollutants require better ecological insights, improved control strategies and new research on ecotoxicology and on the coupling of water, land and atmosphere. We should think not only in terms of immediate effects o nthe humans who drink the water, ubt of the hazards imposed on water as a life support system for a complex network of aquatic organisms.
