This article first points out that China set out to develop computerized information retrieval systems at late 70's when the technology of micros in developed countries was developing rapidly and the application areas were increasingly expanding which resulted in the tendency of decentralization of data processing. Under these circumstances, much attention has been devoted to the application of microcomputers since the computer application to information retrieval started its first step in China.The article then describes the brief history, the application areas and the application modes of microcomputers to information service in China on the basis of investigations. The popularization of microcomputers has laid a good foundation for creating the national computerized Information system.The article looks back the development process of computerized information retrieval system and points out that the mode of application of computers to information service varies in accordance with the development of computer technology. The article outlines the progress of the technology of micros and the combination of this technology with other information technology. Meanwhile, it analyses the objective need for the information organizations to develop the enrichment of information and the integration of information handling functions as well as the individualization of information service. It comes to a conclusion on this basis that to develop small-scale integrated information handling systems with multifunctions by means of combining microcomputers with various advanced information technology is a appropriate mode to realize the modernization of information service for the small and medium-scale information organizations.Connecting with large-scale information handling centers and practising decentralized acquisition, centralized processing and decentralized service of information on the basis of a great variety of integrated microcomputer information handling systems in different technical levels, would be a feasible mode to develop our national computerized information system.
