Methodology for Performance Sampling of A Metropolitan Area Packet-Switched Data Network

This paper documents the approach adopted for performance sampling of a metropolitan area packet switched network used to provide a videotex service to customers in the Miami, Florida area. The basic architecture of the network is described, and two performance parameters critical for this application are discussed. The measurement of these parameters, response time and time to successful access, comprises the major portion of design requirements for a remote test module which performs as a "robot user." The final sections describe the hardware design and controlling software of the remote test module.
