摘要

The early use is described of the ionosphere as a means of communicating to long distances,followed by the rapid growth in radio services relying on this propagation medium. The ways in which the ionosphere influences the properties of a radio signal are reviewed and shown to control how current radio usage has developed. The limitations imposed on transmission characteristics are discussed and ways of combatting these examined. Finally the potential for services relying on new ionospheric propagation mechanisms is considered.
