Computer conference and message systems

Use of a computerized communication system to supplement traditional channels of communication has become an acceptable part of the operation of a large university computer center. CONFER(1), a computer conference and message system, is used for communication with users, among computer center staff members and with staff members from other computer installations. Characteristics of the organization which make it advantageous to use the computer as a medium of communication and the specific applications of the computer center are discussed. The strengths and weaknesses of computerized communication are also considered.
