This paper presents a system concept for Radio-over-Optical transmission in order to increase the radio spectrum efficiency. Cellular operators are seeking large amounts of new spectrum in order to deploy the third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G) wireless systems, while it is difficult to find new spectrum allocations below the 10 GHz band. The Radio-over-Optical technology could help enable the 3G and 4G systems, as well as other Broadband Access solutions to be deployed in a spectrum efficient manner. This paper proposes a Radio-over-Optical system based on a combination of Wireless LAN and optical fiber architecture: radio link topology and design considerations, as well as radio base station performance requirements are presented. In addition to the increased spectrum efficiency, the proposed system enables compact and low cost wireless base stations, and flexible mobile communication systems.
