A new approach to the optimal design of microprogrammable central processing units is presented. First, the program type concept is explained. The program types are a set of operations basic to the major programming areas. Next, a cost performance model of microprogrammable central processing units is developed. The model views the central processing unit as a base hardware and a set of hardware options. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate the model and the development of optimal cost performance curves.
