A brief technical description of the Fourier infrared technique and theory of operation is provided, with emphasis on specificity and speed capabilities. Operational and computational algorithms are described which enable this technique to automatically and simultaneously measure the concentration of several molecular species. A Fourier infrared system has been applied to monitor vinyl chloride in ambient air, with a noise equivalent concentration of 0.2 ppm in a 2 second measurement time. Based on data over a three year period of nickel carbonyl monitoring, a comparison of the Fourier method with a plasma chroma-tograph demonstrates an excellent agreement. The application of monitoring arsine and phosphine simultaneously is also described.
