Although determination of hydroxyl ion is commonly made by inference from a glass electrode pH measurement, this approach is misleading or meaningless if the temperature factor is overlooked. The transposition from pH to pOH demands a mathematical operation in which temperature is one of the variables. This paper describes the theory and instrumentation requirements to make the transposition automatically, enabling hydroxyl ion activity (concentration) or pOH to be read out directly and continuously from an indicating meter or recorder. The principles are demonstrated by a laboratory test.
