Various processes are able to remove refractory compounds from wastewater. However, the feasibility of those processes depends strongly on their overall economy, in terms of investment and oepration costs, and on the possibility of disposing the final waste products. In this context a novel process scheme including ozonation and biotreatment was studied. Refractory compounds are partially oxidized in the ozonation stage, forming biodegradable compoounds which are subsequently recirculated to the biological stage. In comparison to conventional processes a sensitive reduction of the operating costs can be achieved.
