Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209) is the principal component in commercial flame retardant. Concerns over BDE-209 have increased due to its increasing occurrence in the environment and humans. In this study, behavior of BDE-209 in soil-plant system was investigated. Accumulation of BDE-209 in plant roots and shoots was observed for all the six plant species. An inverse relationship was observed between BDE- 209 concentration in roots and its translocation factors. Nineteen additional debrominated (tri- to nona- PBDEs) congeners were detected in the soil and plant samples. Dissipation of BDE-209 in soil mainly contributes to microbial degradation in soil, and there is a significant negative correlation between the residual BDE-209 concentration in soil and the soil microbial biomass measured as the total microbial PLFAs. The results of this study provide important information about the behavior of BDE-209 in soilplant system which is crucial for elucidating the behavior and fate of BDE-209 in the environment.
