A questionnaire was circulated between ARPEL (Asistencia Recíproca PetroleraEmpresarial Latinoamericana) member companies in which their capacity to confront anoil spill contingency on their shores, separately and collectively, is determined. The resultsshow that a need exists for preparing sensitivity maps to be utilized in the contingencyplans. It can be concluded from this study that the Latin American petroleum industrycentered in ARPEL should orient itself toward regional cooperation that wouldstrengthen institutional capacity and maximize the effectiveness of government-industrycollaboration in handling emergency situations.
