Automated laboratory calorimeters provide an efficient way for development and optimization ofchemical processes and for assuring safe process performance. Economy and safety are interrelated, andthe tasks of process scale-up and optimization of the economy and safety of the process can be solvedefficiently. The calorimeter, with its high degree of reproducibility of the experimental conditions inrelation to changing parameters, allows a straightforward design of the experiments, and therefore, anoptimum collection of data becomes possible.Examples of the investigation, optimization and scale-up of a chemical process by calorimetryexperiments are presented. The importance of studying safety in the early stages of processdevelopment is shown, resulting in an integrated process development. In doing so, the chance of aninherently safe process, where the severity is reduced, can be maximized.
