Perception of the priority between auditory and visual information presented with a certain delay on a wide screen

In this paper, the perception of the priority between auditory and visual information was investigated presented with a certain delay on a wide screen. An experiment of an auditory-visual stimulus presentation was performed in 13 subjects. A computer graphics image of a patrol car and its siren sound were used as the visual and auditory stimuli, respectively, and either the auditory or visual stimulus was delayed a certain time from the start of the presentation. The following results were obtained from the experiment: the subjects could perceive the order of the stimuli correctly when the time delay exceeds /spl plusmn/160 ms or more, the sensitivity to the delay between the auditory and visual information was higher in the central visual field than in the peripheral visual field, the priority of the visual information was higher than that of the auditory one in both the central and peripheral visual fields, and the priority of the visual information in the peripheral visual field was lower than that in the central visual field.
