In this paper a reverberation chamber (RC) approach is recommended in order to sufficiently characterize the electromagnetic environment inside an aircraft cavity. RCs are large over-moded cavities wherein the electromagnetic field is isotropic and randomly polarized. In order to ensure a sufficient degree of uniformity and isotropy the electromagnetic field inside them must be properly perturbed. This is usually accomplished electronically or mechanically. Our approach is based on mechanically stirred RCs. Mechanically stirred RCs consist of large complex stirrers and operate as multimode cavities. The stirrers are typically rotated through a large number of positions so that the RC is an ensemble of a large number of cavities with different shapes. In such a way, the chamber mode configuration alters, causing the maxima and minima of the electromagnetic field to change location inside the fuselage.
