A detailed 3D finite element (FEM) model of the racetrack-shaped TF model coil for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has been developed for the investigation of its transient and AC behaviour. Transient analysis has been performed for rise times of the voltage surge in the range between 0.5 /spl mu/s and 500 /spl mu/s. The frequency range for AC analysis is up to 500 kHz. Frequency dependent phenomena such as the influence of eddy currents in the conductor and in the steel plates on the damping and the attenuation as well as the displacement of the magnetic flux are considered. The analysis results are compared with the results of a network model with lumped elements. 2D axisymmetric FEM models are used to determine the values of the network elements, namely the effective resistances, capacitances and self and mutual inductances in the frequency range of interest.
