Low back pain is a leading cause of morbidity, disability, and lost productivity. About 90% of adults suffer from back problems during their lives, In the US, direct health care costs and indirect cost of work loss due to low back pain have been estimated to exceed $50 billions annually. Lumbar fusion has been advocated as a surgical procedure for effectively treating disorders associated with low back pain. However, studies on the mechanical behavior of the lumbar spine face problems such as how to simulate physiological load while increasing the accuracy and decreasing the costs of measuring instruments.
