The early visual pathways in the primate retina have been found to consist of sustained and transient ganglion cells, in particular, the transient type provides preprocessed information to important motion selective areas such as V1 and MT, which are responsible for motion detection and perception. This paper describes the modelling and design of transient ganglion cells which form an important layer in a 2-D neural motion detection filter for attentional modulation. Included are discussions of the biologically inspired approach of the model, the neural architecture which the transient layer is part of, and computer simulation results.
