Prototype lithium-ion cells are configured to investigate the capacity utilization of lithiated nickel cobalt dioxide cathode with MCMB and carbon-carbon composite anode materials at different charge voltages. Both anode materials can be used to obtain high cathode capacity utilization at higher charge voltages. The combined electrode capacity utilization is higher for C-C/LiNiCoO/sub 2/ than MCMB/LiNiCoO/sub 2/ couple. A specific energy of more than 200 Wh/kg is achievable with C-C composite based lithium-ion cells. The cyclability of the configured cells is excellent for C-C composite cells and poor for MCMB based cells.
