This paper deals with Automatic Generation Control of a two equal area reheat thermal system provided with integral type supplementary controllers. A modified quadratic performance index based on area control errors, time error accumulation and inadvertent interchange has been proposed for optimizing integral gain setting of the conventional supplementary controllers. Investigations reveal that the transient as well as the steady state accumulation in time error and inadvertent interchange are considerably reduced with the optimum integral gain setting using modified performance index than using conventional performance index for both with and without generation rate constraint (GRC).
