The Application Of A Database System To On-line Security Assessment In An EHV-network

Two main reasons exist for the incorporation of a data base management system into a power system security assessment package. They are: i) to enable the use of a modular structure in the software design. This leads to an ease of extension and maintainability of the software as required by computer system and power system developments. ii) to provide a standardised data structure for the many varied system activities having common data requirements. The application discussed in this paper involves the monitoring and security checking of an EHV network and the system is implemented on a PDP 11/70 pro- cess computer. The particular functions described involve: i) data acquisition (ii) network topology determination (iii) network observability determination (iv) state estimation (v) limit checking (vi) operators load flow. The features of particular interest include the structuring of the data base to optimise the performance of the various software functions, and the interface mechanism between the various, often independent, activities in the system. The method of initialising and updating the data base from cards and/or terminal is described, and the facilities for concurrently studying both real-time and simulation systems are Outlined. A number of data base oriented utilities are mentioned which support the on-line operation and software development and which assist in maintaining and debugging the system.
