Priority Energy Technologies and Their Roles under the Clean Development Mechanism

The Clean Development Mechanism has attracted more attention and raised greater expectations than any other provision of the Kyoto Protocol, in particular because it is the only element of the Protocol that bridges the divide between North and South. Technical guidelines to facilitate the implementation of CDM projects are urgently required. This study presents the methodology to assess CDM projects that can estimate both the direct benefits and co-benefits simultaneously. An assessment model (AIM-Local) was developed to systematically analyze the relations between local energy services and environmental protection. As an example, the situation to implement CDM projects in Beijing City and the impacts to the local region were studied. The result is positive as CDM projects in Beijing City can achieve obvious co-benefits while achieving CO_2 emission reductions. Priority technologies for CDM projects in the local region are also identified by considering their direct benefit and co-benefit.
