Many papers have been published on the development of 1/2" high definition (HD) VCRS, Bandwidth of the HDTV signal so wide that a multi-channel & multisegment recording method is employed for HD VCRS. In recent years, one of the main concerns of the recording method for HD VCRs has been how to realize variable speed playback. We developed a 1/2" HD VCR using the 2 channel 3 segment recording method. However, it has been pointed out that realization of variable speed playback in this recording method is very difficult. This paper describes a new method which enables the VCR to perform the noiseless variable speed playback.
