Summary form only given. Periodically-poled LiNbO/sub 3/ (PPLN) is an outstanding nonlinear optical material. Various PPLN-based frequency conversion devices have been developed. The piezoelectric and electrooptic (EO) effects of PPLN also have attracted more and more research attention. In this report, we show that a high-frequency, and wide bandwidth integrated EO modulator (EOM) can be achieved though quasi-velocity-matching (QVM) technique. Comparing with a conventional EOM with phase-reversed electrodes, the PPLN-based EOM has some advantages, e.g. the lower drive voltage and better stability Since PPLN is also a good nonlinear and piezoelectric crystal, it is possible to combine several functions in a PPLN wafer that is very attractive for modern opto-electronic Systems.
