The Ilwaco tire fire and spill: chemistry and health and s afety aspects

In the fall of 1995, shredded tire chips were used as road fill to repair landslide damage to State Route 100 Loop, near Ilwaco, Washington. A few weeks later the road cracked, and gases and steam escaped. Tire pyrolysis product began spilling from the bottom of the slope under the road into an adjacent tideflat. The tire chips under the road surface caught fire and began smoderning.
