The genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the loading of a wire to satisfy special requirements in the backscattering of a straight wire scatterer. The optimization goals may be satisfied in terms of a range of angles or frequencies, the side lobe level, the load values, beamwidth value, or a combination of the previous quantities. The backscattering level of this wire antenna is controlled by using different loads (passive only) or voltage sources. Surprisingly, for a straight wire scatterer with a single load (or single feed), subjected to a normally incident plane wave significant minimization of sidelobe level, reaching about -27dB below the case of a short circuited wire case, has been achieved over an angular sector (0掳-60掳).
