OIL SPILLS IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY (1985–1994)

U.S. Coast Guard data show a clear upward trend in oilspills in Chesapeake Bay. From 1985 through 1994, there were approximately1,313,218 gallons of oil spilled. Pipelines accounted for 37% ofthe total spill volume. 71% of the total amount of oil spilled during the10-year period was diesel or no. 2 fuel. The average size of a spill in the1- to 99-gallon range decreased annually from 1989.
