Historical perspective of CFD in aerospace inlast 30 years is firstly given. It is shown thatthere remain problems that are geometricallysimple but difficult to simulate even though wesee a lot of simulations over complex bodyconfigurations. The result indicates that CFDresearch is now in the "specific phase" andrequires some innovation.The innovation includes "evolutionaleffort" and "revolution". As an example ofevolutional effort, LES (Large EddySimulaitons)/RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokessimulations) hybrid method is taken asan example. Shift from RANS to LES/RANShybrid occurs not only because of the progressof computers but also because of ourrecognition that separated flows are inherentlyunsteady and successful simulations requireLES-like computations.Comment is given that there may be othertypes of research necessary for CFD to becomea real useful tool for the design in addition tojust showing CFD capability for complex bodyconfigurations. As one of the examples,construction of CFD database is presented.Another issue was to make a CFD infrastructureso that people outside CFD community may useCFD as a tool to hit or refine their ideas.It is concluded that we have not found theclear clue for the revolution of CFD researchbut that may come out from the requirement bythe design and development process.
