Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)has proposed a new positioningavigationservice using pseudolites installed on the HighAltitude Platforms Systems (HAPS), such as thestratospheric airship (SPF), and the high-altitudeunmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Ifpseudolites (PLs) were mounted on theSPFs/UAVs, their GPS-like signals would bestable augmentations that would improve theaccuracy, availability, and integrity of GPS-basedpositioning systems. In order to establishthe fundamental technologies for such a service,the augmentation tests using a GPS pseudoliteinstalled on a helicopter were conducted. Thesewere the first flight tests using a station-keepingvehicle as a signal transmitting source in Japan.The position of the pseudolite antennaunderneath the helicopter, which is analogousto the GPS 'precise ephemeris', wassuccessfully determined with a few centimetersaccuracy by the inverted GPS method. Also, theresults demonstrate the efficacy of integratingthe pseudolite signal with GPS.
