ALT's method of scanning utilizes multiple facets of a single polygon in conjunction with multiple light beams reflected off of each facet. This method of scanning covers a greater target area than is covered scanning a target with a single facet. This fact is simply a function of the geometry created by deflecting a laser beam off the facet surface of a spinning polygon. Because the angle through which the beam is deflected is fixed, the area scanned at the target is also fixed. ALT's technology overcomes this scan sweep constraint by utilizing multiple facets and light sources to concurrently sweep segments of a fixed screen display. The number of facets addressed on a single polygon becomes a function of the scanning target. If, for example, the scanning target is defined as a cylinder, all the facets of a rotating polygon can be used to image or scan the 360-degree target inside the cylinder.
