An instrument for the measurement of respiratory resistance, the Airflow Perturbation Device (APD), was constructed and tested on human subjects. The measurement of elevated respiratory resistance is important for the diagnosis of many respiratory diseases. The device is compact, portable, and easy to use. Testing on healthy human subjects showed APD resistance to be sensitive to changes in resistance and correlated with airway resistance as measured by body plethysmography.
