This paper examines the practical application of advanced theoretical techniques, based on a hybrid combination of circuit theory and rigorous electromagnetic field solutions, to two distinct, but fundamentally related, problems. The first concerns an electromagnetic compatibility scenario, for which prediction of the emissions produced by a 50 MHz CMOS clock circuit combined with a number of simple PCB track layouts, and including a variety of board and load configurations, is to be assessed. The second relates to the integration of antennas with transceiver modules. In the first application, a unified analysis approach is desirable to ensure compliance with EMC regulations at the design stage, whilst in the latter it is fundamental to the successful development of mobile systems such as pagers and satellite telephones. The practical implementation of a novel hybrid theoretical methodology is detailed, together with a discussion of differences in frequency and time domain analysis approaches.
