To remain competitive in global and volatile markets, a manufacturing enterprise needs to maintain close alignment between the operation of its business, social and IT systems. However results of a recent survey of business process engineering practice in the UK have shown that large scale IT system change is difficult to cost justify and achieve within satisfactory timescales. In this context the paper reports on potential benefits and current constraints when using: (1) enterprise modelling; (2) integration infrastructures; and (3) reusable business components.
