Compact diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser have been used to study the hyperfine spectrum of /sup 127/I/sub 2/ at 532 mm by means of modulation transfer spectroscopy. The laser frequency has been stabilized to a hyperfine line of the iodine. A long-term frequency stability of /spl sigma/=7/spl times/10/sup -11/ for /spl tau/=100 s has been obtained from the measurement of the beat frequency between two independent iodine-stabilized laser systems.
