Abstract: Spectral mixture analysis (SMA) has been applied to radiometrically corrected Landsat-TM and AVIRIS data for estimating green vegetation fractional cover in a test area of Southern France, using reference endmember spectra taken from a library of ground high spectral resolution measurements of vegetation elements and various soil and rock surfaces. Results are expressed as relative contributions of shade, green vegetation and background on a pixel by pixel basis. Results of SMA appear similar to the calculation of a simple spectral vegetation index (NDVI), but can give more interpretable results in terms of scaled fractions of green vegetation or soil and rock backgrounds. !8
