In 1992 Optus Communications became the second Australian telecommunications carrier, taking over the previously government owned AUSSAT in the process. It inherited two A series craft (Hughes HS 376) and one B series (Hughes HS 601) satellite. The satellites provide domestic interconnections to all five television networks as well as remote area direct to the home services. The system technology is described with reference to the uplink configuration, the terrestrial network and the performance. The specification of the digital transmission system is outlined and the results of the performance measurement are presented.
