'Chameleon radio' multi standard international ground to train radio equipment

International trains must communicate faultlessly with the ground system of each country they pass through. The power cars cannot be fitted with six different radios and the days of changing locomotive and driver at every border are over. The Siemens International Train Radio (ITR) supplied for the Eurostars and Class 92 freight locomotives is a "Chameleon Radio" that changes to match the local ground system as the train crosses the border and presents all the standard displayed messages in the language selected by the driver-throughout the journey. Eventually this concept will include the future European digital standard based on 9OO MHz currently being studied by UIC, with all the individual national facility requirements. The Chameleon Radio will switch between current and new standards on national networks. Since no national system will switch over completely, replacing all its ground infrastructure at the same time, Chameleon Radio will allow old and new systems to coexist.
