Loch Sloy was the first hydroelectric power scheme developed by Scottish Hydro Electric's predecessor, the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board. It was built primarily to supply electrical power to Clydeside and Central Scotland and was officially opened by the Queen Mother in 1950. In recent years, the plant at Sloy has exhibited signs of serious deterioration of the mechanical integrity of runners and electrical integrity of generator winding insulation. The authors describe how, in order to secure its asset, Scottish Hydro Electric initiated a programme to refurbish Sloy power station over a five year period concluding in 1996.
