Normal subjects were tested at specific respiratory rates and volumes. The respiratory rates selected for each subject depended on the individual's normal breathing rate. A nonlinear relationship between vagal power and respiratory rate was found. The maximum power occurred at each individual's normal respiratory rate. An inverse relationship between volume and power was confirmed. It was observed that the value of end tidal CO/sub 2/ was correlated with the subject's perceived level of difficulty.
