N/sup th/ order moment generating function for optically amplified receivers with application to timing recovery in lightwave communications

We derive for the first time an N/sup th/ order moment generating function (MGF) characterisation for the signal and noise processes associated with an optically pre-amplified receiver. This provides the basis for investigating and optimising the timing recovery process for optically amplified lightwave systems.
