Several types of fluence diagnostics have been developed over the last five years to measure intense ion beams on the PBFA II accelarator at Sandia National Laboratories and on the Gamble II accelerator at the Naval Research Laboratories. These include the bolometer, nuclear activation, K/spl/sub alpha// x-ray imaging, calorimetry, multiframe ion pinhole camera techniques. The author presents a comparative analysis of these and other techniques established to monitor ion-beam energy. Issues evaluated include time-resolution, measurement accuracy, expense, ease of operation, repeatability, spatial resolution, measurement limitations.
