BBC investigations into improved PAL

The BBC, as befits a broadcaster, was concerned with improved coding for use within and between studio centres with minimal impact on the requirements of domestic viewing equipment. In particular, a great deal of work was carried out on the separation of luminance and chrominance using two and three dimensional filtering and motion adaptive methods. The paper describes the history of investigations into improved PAL coding by the BBC, leading up to the advent of PALplus.
