A prototype data acquisition system of a silicon strip detector with a digital readout scheme has been designed and fabricated. The system consists of a master timing generator, readout control, and a detector emulator card on which special shift register VLSIs were used. The crucial issue was to feed high-frequency clock signals as quietly as possible with less influence on the front end analog circuits. A special shift register VLSI with a silicon compiler system was also designed. This prototype version could be used for a beam test of a prototype silicon strip detector and also as a design basis of a real data acquisition system for a silicon strip detector. This prototype system also has an application area for a development of digital-oriented and fast response detectors such as microstrip gas chambers and/or RICH counters (ring imaging Cerenkov counters).
