Estimation of arterial system parameters from noninvasive measurements

An approximate computational procedure for estimating the parameters of systemic arterial circulation is presented. The basic assumption is that only noninvasive measurements of aortic flow wave, and systolic and diastolic pressure values are available. A pressure wave is synthesized by interpolating the systolic and diastolic brachial pressures with two cubic splines reducing the problem to a form extensively studied in literature. The parameters of the three-element windkessel model are then estimated by using an iterative optimization algorithm. The feasibility of the method is studied by applying it to both simulated and experimental data and comparing the results with noninvasively obtained aortic pulsatile flow and pressure, and with the actual values when possible.
